Quality, Environment, Safety:
highlights for engineers of the new era

ROMA - Italy
10th - 23rd September 2000

Course Contents

The summer course will give an overview on Environmental Impact Assessment in Project development and QEHS integrated management Systems (Quality, Environment, Health, Safety), topics of great relevance for the professional life of Engineers that have to deal with ever growing demanding quality and safety standards in every field. Through lessons and visits we will focus as well on the End of Life Management of Products and Industrial Plants.
The amount of academic hours (lessons+visits) will be a minimum of 30. Hopefully the balance between lessons and outdoor visits will give you the opportunity to learn more about the topic without sleeping too much in a classroom.

The following is only a rough schedule of lessons, taking into account that the course will take place in september and still many new adjustments could be done to increase the value of the course.

List of lectures:

  • From Environmental Impact Assessment in Project Development to QEHS Integrated Management Systems and End of Life Management of Products and Plants: introductory lesson by Prof M.Tronci and Prof. M. Guarascio
  • Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) - Prof. Massimo Guarascio
  • Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) - Prof. Paolo Frankl
  • Quality Management Systems (QMS) - Prof. Massimo Tronci

    List of visits:

  • AST - Acciai Speciali Terni- Società delle Fucine manufactures a wide range of forgins from carbon, high and medium-alloyed and stainless steels mainly destined to power generation, mechanical, chemical, petro-chemical, off-shore and aerospace applications, sectors where the dependability of machinery and plant components is essential for safety and continuity of service. A strict control of the manufacturing cycle phases grants the high quality level of the production. According to procedures and specifications issued by the Quality Dep., each manufacturing step is documented to comply with the QS philosophy.

  • Social Activities

If you are a positive person, restless when your mom says it is time to sleep, ready to have fun together with newly made friends from all Europe...then just trust us, and don't tell your mom about it!!!

Singing, dancing, wine tasting in pubs, real italian food and language, sightseeing in the "Eternal City", shopping in the centre, romantic walking under the moon light are just some hints of what we have in mind for you...

but if you are really curious, just let say that we are ready to offer you 2 of the most unforgetable weeks in all your life... you will enjoy with us the italian way of having fun, and we will do our best to make you enjoy your time so to start a friendship that hopefully will last a lifetime.

if you want to know all the story.... you have only to be among the lucky ones that will come here and help us to write it!

    Course Schedule

We will not give a definitive schedule right now. Let's just point out general principles that we will take into account when making it:

  • Wake-up hour will be around 8.45. Lessons will take place during the mornings, starting at 10.00 a.m. for 3 hours each day. Timetable will be different in those days when a day-long visit will take place.

  • We will not leave you easily alone but we know you will love to discover the city also with some free time, so we will try to accomplish your requests (but don't take it for granted ;o)

  • Many different activities will be organized during the evenings (we will add them here soon) and we will plan also back-up activities so that bad weather (highly improbable) will not take us off balance.

  • A full week-end in the middle of the Summer Course will be devoted to suntanning and swimming at a seaside resort not very far from Rome... we will sleep 2 nights in a campsite having great time together... so don't forget suncream and sunglasses and a swimming suit... as well as your best ideas for sand-castles!!

    still more to come...

    Lodgings

    Youth Hostel - Ostello Marello
    Via Urbana 50
Metro Station CAVOUR - B line

This is the place were you will sleep, so you will not spend very much time there! The hostel is situated very close to the University, in the very center of the city. Only a five minute walk is required to reach the faculty. Within half an hour slow walk distance all the mayor touristic places are situated (Colosseo, Fontana di Trevi...) as well as the Termini railway station, many shops streets, pubs and so on...

The hostel is ruled by Padre Alvaro, a south american priest very friendly with everybody... don't be afraid of him being a priest.... he never complained with us for all the noise we made in the past events... and nobody ever complained for the alcohol our partecipants and us introduced in the rooms... some of our best not planned parties took place right there in the hostel...

Breakfast will be served everyday at the hostel. Lunch and dinner will be provided according to the schedule of the day, at the faculty cantine most of the times, with sandwiches when being on the move, or in special places like fraschetta or pizzeria during some evenings. At least one cooked hot meal will be served everyday. It will be likely that you will eat quite a lot of pasta, our national food, and many other typical italian foods like Pizza, Ice Creams (the best ones you have ever tasted!) and wines.
Coffee breaks are scheduled during the lessons.

IMPORTANT: if you follow a special diet, if you are vegetarian or allergic to some kind of food or drink, please notify us AS SOON AS POSSIBLE so to make us able to provide the right food for you.
