PRESENTS:

"From Biosystems to Bioprocess Engineering: an Interdisciplinary Challenge"

(Rome, September 8th - 20th 1996)

University College of Engineering
Università degli studi di Roma
"La Sapienza"
Rome, Italy

The course

Recent developments in genetics and molecular biology have stimulated widespread interest in biotechnology.
Recombinant DNA and hybridoma technologies provide transformed microorganisms and revolutionary bioproducts with new and unexpected properties. The range of novel microbial products is impressive and includes hormones, growth factors, new antibiotics and anticancer agents.
Successful development of biotechnology and full exploitation of its benefits, however, requires integrated knowledge of biological and chemistry sciences and principles of bioprocess engineering methodology.
The primary aim of this course is to present the fundamentals of bioprocess engineering, with a particular emphasis to innovative bioprocesses based on cells, enzymes and antibodies.
Because of the multidisciplinary nature of biotechnology, contributions will be presented from experts in fields ranging from biochemistry and molecular genetics to biochemical engineering.

Social Activities

Sun, warm temperature, italian food, latin fun, mixed in a city so rich of history as Rome is, are the main ingredients of the free-time program.
We'll organize everything to make your staying in Rome an exiting experience:

Roma, "La Città Eterna" (The Eternal Town)

A very famous legend tells that Rome was founded in April 21st 754 BC, by two brothers named Romolo and Remo and brought up by a she-wolf. Since then the importance of Rome has increased century by century, becoming the capital of the Roman Empire first, and the centre of Christianity then. In more than three thousand years Rome has become rich of marvellous and unique monuments: the Colosseum, the Roman Foro, the Pantheon, St. Peter and the Vatican Museums, Piazza Navona, the steps of Trinit… dei Monti, the Campidoglio. Imposing palaces, churches, fountains alternate with caratheristic narrow streets and little houses where the real roman life goes on: pubs, craftmen, bar, pizzerie, spaghetterie, fashion shops and ice-cream sellers.
All it can be written it is always worthless compared to what you will the chance to discover yourself: its beauties and its magic atmosphere...

The Engineering College of Rome

The College was founded in 1817 by the Pope Pio VII, and dealt basically with Hydraulics and Road Construction. In 1873 it reached University rank, yet it was not included in the Roman University plan. In 1913 in order to tailor the Engineering School to the new requirements of industry, it was split into two sections: Civil and Industrial Engineering. Later on, in 1960 it became the "Engineering College" at the Rome University "La Sapienza". Now the College offers twelve degrees based on a five year program, ranging from Aeronautics, Mechanics, Chemistry and Materials to Telecommunications, Electronics and Civil. In the last year people studying in our College were more than 17.000, while the population of the students of the whole University of Rome "La Sapienza" was more than 180.000.
