This letter, which occupies the main part of the online application form on the BEST portal, will be your only pass that will decide whether if you’ll take part, or not, in the fantastic course where you want to go at any costs ... so, you must use all your best qualities, from the linguistic/Anglo-Saxon ones to the humorous ones, to be able to transmit that enthusiasm, “thirsty for knowledge” and a bit crazy, perfectly fitting with the spirit of BEST.
In fact, the reader is quite important: if you are writing to a Swedish group, you should use a different tone than the one you would use for the Spanish or the Greeks... Remember that the BEST groups are always & only formed by students (so no excessive formalism), but every culture has its own way of being, of course, and be able to demonstrate yourself in tune with that way may be the winning key! Not less important is what you can bring and offer from your country. In our case, stereotypes help us a lot (sometimes), so “use” the fact that Italians are the most opens and outgoings among the Europeans, and the few chosen to be able to cook pasta in a good way...
Anyone who has got a bit of experience in BEST will tell you that one of its most famous sayings is: "Work Hard, Party Harder", or better, the strength/skill/ability of staying up till late every night, at the funniest parties, going on among alcoholic drinks coming from every latitudes, crazy dances and friendships of every kinds, and then being able to be ready, fresh and interested for the next morning lessons or company visits.
Does it looks too much tiring and stressful...? Well in a sense it is, but you will have time to sleep when you’ll get back to Italy... And I promise you won’t regret it, and you’ll have incredible memories, that will remain forever.
(And quite often, you’ll be so fascinated about all this that you won’t be able to live without it... and maybe one day you'll write a guide like this =D)
So, don’t forget to show that you are also interested in the topic of the course, which will allow you to “touch” realities that in our university are often denied, as the practice... You will have the opportunity to visit leading companies in the treated field, finally understanding how and where is applied that abstruse formula written on a blackboard ...
As the last important point, I would finally mention your personal touch... Here it’s on you to “hit” the organizers and push them to choose you, among hundreds of letters ... be yourself as much as possible, showing your best personal characteristics, that make knowing & welcoming you worth it... Prove yourself to be ready to share your spirit with guys from all over Europe, to be crazy and funny, passionate and ready for an experience beyond all boundaries ...
In the end, that's what is important, there are no magic formulas or ritual phrases to ensure to be chosen, if not than understand and agree with the right spirit...the spirit of BEST!
To sum it all, we said that in a good motivation letter can’t be missing:
1. The interest in the country you are visiting, with its cultures and landscapes
2. The offer of an Italian "spaghetti and mandolin", that brings the beloved Italy abroad in the best way
3. The passion for the topic of the course, that makes you active even in the "teaching"
4. Your personal “signature”, to let say the organizers: "I Want YOU!"
When everything above is done, you just have to cross your fingers and wait for selection time (usually ten days) to see if you can start looking for the best low-cost airline for you, and pack the luggage ...
If you will be chosen (I'll hope), do not panic, the foreign organizers and the guys of BEST Roma will take care and support you in every aspect of the trip’s organization.
I conclude by saying that, from my experience, I know that if you’ll go out with BEST you’ll come back Italy excited, wasted and with lots of new friends from all over Europe ...Once rested and recovered, you have to know that you can “switch side” and join the organization of events like that, and more ... so don’t hesitate to contact your Local BEST Group (LBG) in Rome at:
